I had a hard time at last night's Girl Scout meeting - the kids ran amok a bit, and I need to work out a way to not have that happen.  It's still astonishing to me how 10 2nd and 3rd grade girls can be so wild, when there are 2 adults in charge!  I definitely need to work on my group management skills.  There's one girl in particular who is extremely distractable and creates wildness in others (including, especially, In Casper) and in general the fact that 7 of the girls are in the same grade at the same school and are mostly good friends exacerbates things.  This meeting required us to be outdoors for part (planting seeds) and in the gym at the church for part (setting up tents).  It's much easier to manage them physically and socially when we are seated around a table, which works for some activities.  I just need to figure out how to work with them when we can't do that. Thank god we only have a troop of 10.  But I am a bit worried about our upcoming activities prior to our camp-out.

Census meme:
March 1981 I am living in two houses, both in the same town in rural Maine, since my parents separated about 9 months ago. One house is our former family house, currently inhabited by my father, a big 1930s four-square style house with lovely woodwork and a big yard, that was going to be my parents' back-to-the-land homestead.  My mother's house is rented, a less fancy Cape, and we only have 2 bedrooms so my 2 siblings and I share a 3-story bunkbed.  I am 8, and my siblings are 5 and 2.  Since it's March in Maine, there's probably snow on the ground. (I am honestly not positive which year my parents separated; it may not have been until late spring 1981, in which case we're all still living together in the fancy house.  One thing I am certain of is I hated my 3rd grade teacher.)

March 1991 I am in my freshman year of college, by this point living by myself in a "maid's quarters" room in a wing of my dorm that is about 8x10 feet.  The dorm is elaborate Victorian-stone architecture, and I love my tiny room.  I moved out of my quad after the woman with whom I shared a room spent every evening sitting on her bed watching me, which freaked me right out.  I'm in suburban Philadelphia, but probably the campus cherry trees are not yet in bloom.

March 2001 I am living in Northwestern CT in a small town, in a rented apartment which is the first floor of a small and modest Victorian house, with my husband and one juvenile cat. We are here for my husband's work; I am in theory working on my dissertation. I shovel snow and volunteer at the local public library.  Our landlord Vinnie, who lives upstairs, has a black lab he leaves home alone inside for 10 hours a day, and the dog's pee drips down into our kitchen light fixture.  Our kitten loves to explore the rough-stone, dirt-floor basement.

March 2011 I live in a house I own (okay, the bank owns it - or probably some shadowy international conglomerate who bought my bundled mortgage owns it) in Athens GA.  We live in a sidewalky, family-filled neighborhood with great kids across the street and next door and down the block and great neighbors without kids, too - older couples, single adults, etc. Our house was built in 1922 and we just put a roof on it, and it has old-house issues, but a big yard and a hammock on the front porch and all sorts of great stuff.  I live with my husband, two kids (7 and 4), and two cats (10 and 1).  It's Georgia and we had a warm February, so we have daffodils and cherry trees in full bloom and redbuds coming out.

1. I almost never accomplish anything after 3pm on Fridays. Which makes this an excellent time for writing 25 random things.
2. I like peas a lot. I eat frozen ones as a snack and grow shell peas in the garden, which we tend to scarf up raw.
3. My kids both like peas, too. Thank god I am raising them right in one area.
4. I had been to England, France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Israel, and Jordan before I ever went west of Cincinnati OH (my birthplace).
5. I haven't been out of the US since 2002. I miss traveling.
6. I spent two academic years - one in college, and one in grad school - living in Athens, Greece.
7. It never occurred to me that one day I would be living in Athens, GA.
8. I met my husband in the library at the University of Cincinnati. My first impression of him was to assume he was a German grad student.
9. I have given birth twice without medication, and the adrenaline high afterwards was almost enough to make me consider taking up exercising.
10. After my daughter was born, for about an hour she was wide-eyed and wise-eyed. It was amazing.
11. My son was born really fast, and resembled Winston Churchill, and didn't open his eyes for about 36 hours.
12. Parenting is the hardest thing I have ever done.
13. I have never smoked, and in fact do not know how to inhale.
14. I have a tattoo of a trowel on my right shoulder. Three friends and I got the same tattoo our last week of college. When we showed our major advisor he thought we were joking, and then he was kind of appalled I think.
15. I decided more than 5 years ago that I would never again buy uncomfortable shoes. As a result, almost all of my shoes are Dansko clogs.
16. I wore only men's jeans (Levi's 501s, 32w 34l) from high school until a couple of years ago.
17. I once counted and found I had lived in 13 different domiciles in 5 states by the time I was 18. The longest I have ever lived anywhere is 5 years. Despite this, I am slow to adapt to change.
18. I can't remember any interactions between my parents before they separated when I was 8.
19. I could draw you a pretty accurate floor plan, from memory, of every place I have lived since I was 6.
20. I lived in rural Maine for 4 years, from ages 6-10, and that's what I think of when people ask me where I grew up. That's the place I feel like I was a kid. In generally answer "Where are you from?" with "New England," though.
21. The place I feel I belong most in the world is Woods Hole, MA.
22. I love the ocean, and given the choice would live within walking distance of it.
23. I still miss being an archaeologist sometimes, although it's been 7 years since I left my PhD.
24. I think some of the reason I like gardening is also a reason I liked archaeology: I like dirt, and getting dirty.
25. I don't drive.

unvarnished

Dillo has been crying "I want mommy" for about 25 minutes now (mr. flea is in bed with him). I am very tired and in desperate need of a shower and have the skin of a 14 year old. An *unfortunate* 14 year old.

I think I was tagged for "seven quirky things about you." Let's see what I can come up with:

1. I like to eat frozen peas, while they are frozen. I eat them out of a drinking glass, and pour them right into my mouth. Great summer snack - and healthy, too!

2. I have double-jointed thumbs. I can bend the left all the way back and touch the top of my wrist. I used to be able to do the right one, too, when I was a kid.

3. I don't drive. I got my license when I was 22 and used it for about 3 months before becoming carless again. I am 35 now. I have a license, and access to a car. I am afraid of driving. I am working on this problem. No, I didn't grow up in Manhattan.

Huh. I am feeling boring; maybe more later.

1. What do you normally eat for breakfast?

Store brand bran flakes with raisins on top (i.e. make-your-own raisin bran - I recently decided it was silly to have sugar-covered raisins in my cereal.) One mug of tea. Half of the time, a glass of orange juice.

2. Are you more likely to drink coffee or tea?

Tea, Lady Grey, hot. Also Sleepytime, Lemon Zinger, and Raspberry Zinger. Currently coffee is for emergencies only.

3. Would you consider yourself a good cook?

No. I am a competent cook. I can follow most straightforward recipes. I don't improvise well. I am not very skilled or confident at working with meat. I don't make sauces or roux or stuff like that.

4. What is your favorite meal?

At this moment I am craving McDonalds, which has been happening a lot lately. I've been craving animal fats. Made spaghetti carbonara twice in December. The fanciest and yummiest thing we occasionally make at home is beef bourguignon. But it has no peas in it, sigh, and spaghetti carbonara can...

5. Green eggs and ham: would you eat it?

Why is it green, dye or mold? I am not a big ham fan, anyway, and the eggs had better not be over-easy, as I think they are in the book.
