We were at McDonald's yesterday and Casper got a Happy Meal Katara, from the film they are now calling The Last Airbender. She noted that the Katara looked all wrong, not like Katara is supposed to look, including, "her skin is supposed to be more brownish." It was me who pointed out the sadly missing hair loopies.

Sadly, though, while Casper gets a House Point for Noticing Whitewashing, Dillo gets -10 points for Gender Fail. Because he pitched a fit at getting a Katara too, wanting an Aang, and said she was a "stupid girl," and mr. flea had to go exchange his Katara for a stuffed Momo (their under-3 toy).

Yeah, he's 3, which is the classic age of gender stereotyping and silly ideas ("must! categorize!" goes the 3 year old brain).

We also noted there were no Toph toys and no images of Toph in the ads at Mickey D's. No Toph!

No, the movie only covers season 1, so no Toph, and Zuko is purely an antagonist.

I saw some still shots, and I'm distressed to see Cliff Curtis as Firelord Ozai. (Cliff Curtis was the father in Whale Rider, quite a wonderful Maori actor.)

Wait, isn't the whole point of Ozai that we don't see his face like, ever? I was so sure that was the point.

Also, I know Curtis is perpetually young -- he has to have been 30+ when Three Kings came out*, lo these 12 or 13 years ago -- but I'm pretty sure he is rather younger than I would have pegged a sibling of Iroh's. Like, Iroh should be 60+, and one presumes that Ozai isn't that much younger.

*In which he played an Iraqi businessman. I swear, the different ethnicities he's played over the years.

We see Ozai's face alla time. Curtis is 41. Ozai does seem pretty young in the animated show, though - 50 tops? Very buff, and no greys at all.

Heh. Meanwhile my boy is going through a phase where he wants to grow his hair out, paint his toenails regularly (his sister and I do it, it must be cool) and be pretty.

I am basically fine with this although the urge to give him a back-and-sides is sometimes almost overwhelming. The argument that it will grow out more attractively if it is trimmed once in a while doesn't seem to be working with him.

They have stuffed Momos?!?!

So far we have glider Aang, Momo-launching Appa, and Boomerang Sokka. I may need a stuffed Momo though.

Mal's comment on pulling the Sokka from the Happy Meal box: "It's some guy. With a club."

"That's Sokka. With his boomerang."

"It doesn't LOOK like Sokka. And it's too bendy for a boomerang."

But then later, showing the collector card:

"Dad! Look! It's the REAL Sokka!"

To which R replied: "It's a real person playing Sokka, but I don't agree that he's the REAL Sokka."
