We didn't get out much in NC, but I did have some sense of how far it was to various locations. I would really like to do some weekend trips now that we have a little disposable income, and I'm continually surprised at where Athens is in relation to other places. Like

only 8 hours from Cincinnati! (via Knoxville and Lexington) Google maps routes Chillicothe through WVA, and suggests 9 hours 45 minutes, which is actually closer than Durham was I think.

3 hours 15 minutes to Asheville (I want to do a fall leaf weekend and buy APPLES - we got some local apples through our CSA-type thing, Athens Locally Grown, which so far ROCKS, and they tasted like actual real apples, incredibly different from grocery store apples. They had texture! So now I want to find a steady supply of them (the CSA was sold out this week)

Charleston and Savannah are both about 4 h 15 minutes - I never realized they were basically right next to each other. I would also like to do a fall beach weekend - I love the beach in the off season. Even winter would be great!

We are only 4 hours from Birmingham or Montgomery AL! It is so deeply strange to me to be living next to Alabama, which growing up was much farther away in my mind than, say, France.

8.5 hours to New Orleans, which I've never seen.

7.5 hours to Orlando. Casper really likes the Disney ads we see on TV during Funny Videos, though I'm not dying to take her there. I am not a theme park kind of person.

On the down side, 9h 45 minutes to Washington DC, 17.5 hours to Boston, 18 hours to Woods Hole. I guess driving north is really out of the question unless we do a multiple-stage road trip.

No kidding. I thought NC was the Deep South!

On the up side, I was looking idly at Amtrak's network, and discovered there is a direct train between Atlanta and New Orleans. You could also go to Memphis! Which to my brain is as mythical and distant a city as Quivira.

Well, two hours apart. But pretty close.

Oh, man, I want to go pick apples so badly. Hmm. Might need to coordinate an outing for that.

You should go up to Hendersonville!

It is exceedingly gorgeous. And the Home of My Nana. ;>

And numerous apple orchards, I see!

Runs in my mind they have an apple festival, sometime in September. I remember getting badly stuck in traffic up there once, thanks to the apple festival.

There is, or was, a fantastic little cider-pressing place on the road between H'ville and Greenville, too.
