It is so deeply strange to me to be living next to Alabama, which growing up was much farther away in my mind than, say, France.
No kidding. I thought NC was the Deep South!
On the up side, I was looking idly at Amtrak's network, and discovered there is a direct train between Atlanta and New Orleans. You could also go to Memphis! Which to my brain is as mythical and distant a city as Quivira.
