I am 35 years old and I have never had a tropical vacation. I just want a quiet, mosquito-free island paradise with warm water and books to read and good food and very limited children. Is that so much to ask?

(Okay, I have had one sort-of tropical vacation: when I was 10 my grandparents took us to Disney World as a consolation prize for our parents' divorce. There were no beaches, and no drinks with umbrellas in them.)

You totally deserve a tropical vacation. Make someone take the kids for a weekend. Do it as a celebration once Mr. Flea gets a job.

This sounds a lot like my Hammock Fantasy, which has seen me through many a long day: I'm somewhere outdoors, but shady, it's about 72 degrees out, light breeze, I have a hammock, a really good novel, and some sort of beverage which combines iced tea, fruit juice, and just enough vodka to keep me cheerful, but not so much that I can't focus my eyes on the page.

It is a very sustaining fantasy, and I commend it to you.

(I kept thinking that for our tenth anniversary we would have an actual honeymoon. Instead we will be going to Chicago, in August, for someone else's wedding. I am trying not to be surly because I am very fond of the person getting married, but...rrgh.)

Is that why we went to Disney World? In retrospect, it does seem kind of like an odd thing for Our Grandparents to think of as a good vacation.

(Although we do have mosquitoes, but we also have mosquito spray.)
