Another in the annals of the New York Times Style section on upscale urban parenting...

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/14/garden/14kids.html?_r=1&ref=garden&oref=slogin

If you look at the comments, on page 5 a couple of the people profiled in the article commented, more or less hurt or amused at the mostly negative response to their parenting choices to put designer furniture above their children. My question is, why would anyone agree to be the focus of a NYT Style section article on parenting NOT expecting to be portrayed as a completely shallow, over-priviledged twit? It's their stock in trade! Don't these people READ the Times Style section?

Baby name notes: rich people with designer furniture are likely to name thier kids: Harrison, Cole, Brooke, Raine, Beckett, Vin, Fia, Ryder, Seth.

"Good morning, Mrs. ---. I'm calling from the New York Times, and we'd like to profile you for an article on modern parenting -- "

"Fuck off. No, seriously. I have seen what you do to people. You're in league with everyone's evil in-laws everywhere, aren't you?"

It is a question they are not alone in facing.

Perhaps there should be a telethon. Or at least a congressional inquiry.

I flip through the glossy Cdn design mags, but not too often b/c they make my eyes roll out of my head. Case in point: a house billed as "family freiendly" which had a $6000 silk carpet (!) on the dining room floor (?!!).

Obviously invisible fencing kept the kids from ever setting foot in there.

Our choice of names for our baby (one of the nine listed above) clearly validates our status as "rich people with designer furniture." Why the heck didn't the NYT interview us? I mean, even a cursory look around our spacious 950 square foot mansion reveals:

Designer bookshelves by IKEA

Classic crib & mattress set by BIFMUB [Borrowed-it-from-Mighty-Urchin's-Boss]

Drop-leaf dining room table by MUHBICOAFAFUTNF [Mighty-Urchin's-Husband-Bought-It-Cheap-off-a-Friend-After-Friend-Upgraded-To-New-Furniture]

Pre-flat screen, pre-digital 27" TV by Sony (a priceless antique made safe from thieves only by the fact that it requires a crane to lift the darn thing...)
