Further notes from the trip
Dec. 29th, 2006 07:59 amThe Dillo got, as presents: 6 one-piece suits, 3 shirt and pants suits, and 10 onesies, plus my gift of bear hat and jacket, two toys, and a savings bond. I am drowning in baby clothes, but I think he'll wear 'em all, as we are on the verge of outgrowing the 6-9 month baby jammies.
We got Galaxy Quest the movie! I am dying to watch it, and am trying to remember if it would be scary/inappropriate for Casper. I think it's PG, and the violence is just space-blaster stuff, not graphic.
I regret to note that my father's powder room is no longer wallpapered in flocked black panthers with glowing yellow eyes. It is now painted pale blue, although it still has a black toilet and sink.
Okay, I ran out of steam. I am all a-twitter with grandiose ideas about start-of-year cleaning projects, but singularly lacking in energy to tackle them.
In conclusion, NCistas, know anywhere to get good kielbasa, now that Fowler's has closed? We have Polish new year's traditions to uphold!

12.5 hours on the road, got home at 10pm. Would have been closer to 10 hours but for insane volume-induced traffic on 77 in WV/VA.
Very tired and sick.
Also, a note: if you are 30, own a house in Alexandria VA, and your major event of the year was the purchase of a 30-foot sailboat, just don't send a Christmas letter out and spare the rest of us the fucking heartbreak.

Christmas of Excess
Dec. 25th, 2006 12:40 pmIt's like a present bomb went off - and the tree still has a lot of presents, and all the presents from my MIL/FIL are still in the study. Casper really wasn't able to take it all in, but I think she will appreciate what she got over the weeks to come (books, My Neighbor Totoro, Candyland and Chutes and Ladders). The Dillo got clothes, which he needed, so good. I got books; mr. flea got geek toys but is jealous of his 7 year old nephew's remote control hovercraft thingy and flight simulator.
So the celebrate the excess, of course I am ordering things from the Hanna Andersson sale. Very sensibly, I swear, and all useful things that will be worn tons!!
Aside from the excess, it's a little dull; lots of sitting around. Drear and rainy.
The Dillo has a cold, which manifests itself in occasional snottiness and a lot of coughing. It's very cute little coughing. He's been mildly sick for a week now, but seems to be breathing okay and not in any pain and no fever, or only very mild ones (100 or so) so I'm not worrying about him. Though the coughing makes his eyes all red and sounds rather pathetic, but is occasional and isn't even really affecting his sleep.

Happy Christmas Post, for a change
Dec. 23rd, 2006 10:53 amNPR's story this AM by Margot Adler about the marzipan pringles (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6665095) got me all weepy - partly for the dad-tradition and partly for the sixteen year old son helping make the pringles - yes, my son is only 5 months old, but I was all, "someday my little boy will have this mannish voice and say stuff like, 'mom, you're ruining it!' but help make the candies anyway."
I think I am a sucker for sons. Not that this is a bad thing.

Trip to Ohio, day 1
Dec. 23rd, 2006 09:46 amDear Other People Staying in the Hotel,
I am so sorry. Both for the screaming flailing fit at 9:30 which necessitated removal to the car, and for the inconsolable crying at 12:30. We did our best, I swear.
Humbly,
The Mother
Dear Dillo,
Thank you for being such an angel. You went to sleep with only minor grumbling, and woke up for the regular middle of the night feedings with no fuss. Then you woke up at 5 and when I despaired at the lack of wifi and decided to try to get you back to sleep, you went! And slept until 7:30! You win the baby gold star.
Love,
Mamamama
Dear mr. flea,
You were wonderful. Thank you for being patient when all I wanted to do was administer a thrashing. I am so glad to have you as my partner.
Love,
me
Dear Casper,
ON. THE. LIST.
Love tempered with serious frustration,
Mommy
The drive went as well as could be expected, and much better than I had hoped - we made it in 8 1/2 hours (starting at 6:30 am) and stopped only 3 times. The Dillo was not very happy, but pretty complaisant, and Casper was great. We got to the cousins' and Casper disappeared to play with E (age 4) and they cooperated and shared and had a good time and she came to ask for help when she needed to use the potty. I was very very tired by the time we left for the hotel, though, and then things got ugly. Hope it's better tonight.

Why I am not really a grownup
Dec. 18th, 2006 08:04 pmI realized today that it's Dec. 19, and whoops I am sure I am supposed to buy presents for Casper's 3 teachers. I guess it's better that I thought of this today, and not, say, next Thursday.
Problem: 3 teachers. Gift cards solve everything, of course, and Target gift cards solve double everything, but. Casper has 3 teachers. $10 each feels cheap, but $20 each feels too expensive. Opinions?
Thank god the Dillo has only been in school for 6 days - I feel no obligation to buy his teachers presents this year.
