possibly I am grumpy on Saturday mornings
Feb. 7th, 2009 08:00 amApparently there is a trend of having a "Blessingway" for mothers-to-be instead of a baby shower. In practice this means touchy-feely somewhat spiritual recitation of poems and blessings and little gifts for the mother, replacing the baby shower. Fine concept, but couldn't they have come up with a different name? The Navajo Blessingway is only the most fundamental religious ritual in that culture, including the etiology of the people, and while it is performed for expectant mothers, it also has other circumstances of use. (see http://www.hanksville.org/voyage/navajo/BlessingWay.php3) Hellooo completely inappropriate cultural appropriation!
