I wrote a grant and got 35 Kindles for my workplace, to be used in a class this spring.  As the library liaison, I get to use a Kindle at least through May!  The Kindles arrived today.

Problem 1: I was unable to register my Kindle with Amazon, as the wifi signal in my building was not strong enough.  This is amusing, since my building is in part managed by campus IT, but not surprising, as anyone who has dealt with our campus wifi could tell you.

My plan B was to download the Kindle for PC app to my work PC.  I did so.  I clicked the button to connect to the Kindle store from within the app, planning to "buy" some free Kindle books to test the interface.  I was taken to the Kindle store for amazon.co.uk.  I attempted to reset my location, following the directions.  This repeatedly did not work.  I probably signed in to Amazon different times in the attempt.  So annoying!

I emailed Amazon Kindle support with my trouble and asked for their help.  They replied promptly (within 1.5 hours) and politely informed my that my "Home market" was set to the UK site but they were unable to change this.  It has to be changed through the UK site, as the websites are "separately administered."  I have now emailed the UK Kindle support team, to see what they say.

For the record, I once used amazon.co.uk, maybe 2 years ago, to send a gift of books to a UK friend who had a baby.  I have ordered things from amazon.com and had them shipped to my default address in the US countless times since then, including last week.

Right now I am more amused than anything else, but my patience will not last forever...
