tough week
Jul. 10th, 2009 11:46 amThis week has been kicking my ass - between re-entry after vacation, my summer class starting, Casper having a swimming lesson after camp each day, which has meant dinner at 7:30 and late bedtime, and then the fleas, so most waking moments at home involve washing or vacuuming something - well, I'm ready for the weekend.
And tomorrow is Dillo's birthday and party and I'm not really ready (what the hell am I going to do about a cake?), and then Sunday mr. flea needs to work to make up the time he took flea-bombing the house on Wednesday. And the fleas are not all the way gone, which means we need to keep working at it.
But Casper LOVES the swimming lessons and is really making progress and is so proud of herself. She's an excellent elementary backstroker now, and can tread water and dog paddle (they don't really practice the "rocket" she learned at the beach at the Y). Two weeks ago she couldn't float on her back and wouldn't put her face in the water. I hope we can go to the pool on Sunday so she can get some more practice and show off for me.
I am very excited to meet Dillo's friend Colin at the party. Dillo LOVES Colin. Talks about him every day. Aside from the slow potty progress, he's doing great. I love our morning snuggle times - he wakes up all soft and sleepy and wanting to snuggle. Needs a haircut, and I need to do something about a 3 year checkup for him (although he's not due any shots, it makes sense to take him in - he hasn't been to the doctor since his initial appointment last summer, since he's been healthy.)

Dillo birthday thoughts
Jun. 19th, 2009 12:11 pmHis birthday is the 11th of July, which is only a week after we get back from our trip, so I need to do invites and stuff before we leave.
My thought is to do a backyard party, procure a baby pool (our neighbors have one, actually), a funky sprinkler, and maybe a slip-n-slide or something. We might do some sort of game of who can throw a water balloon the farthest. His birthday is a Saturday, so I am thinking 2-4pm, say on the invite to wear your swimsuit and bring a towel, sunscreen and bug spray if you're particular about brand. No presents. If I get wild and crazy I might make homemade ice cream sandwiches (toll house cookies with homemade ice cream), or we might just have popsicles and ice cream sandwiches, with some fruit too (grapes, watermelon).
Invite: neighbors (Spencer and his baby sister; Hannah and the Evil Owen, who unfortunately we can't not invite, really, even though Dillo will not be happy about it); from school, his "good buddy" Colin (whose parents we don't know), Hampton (whose birthday Dillo attended, and mr. flea liked her parents, and she has a big sister who is Casper's age). Maybe one more kid from day care - he likes Maggie, but maybe she is too much younger.
Sounds manageable, right? I have a lot of ideas for presents: a drum (a proper one, not a kiddie one); stomp rocket; sandbox (plastic turtle sandboxes are on sale at Kroger for $20); bicycle helmet; rocket sheets (which I mentioned to Mother); baseball tee (he has asked for the "batter batter baseball" he's seen commercials for); Duplo dinosaur set (which he wanted in a toy store last month). He's a happy little dude; he'll be happy with whatever.
I'm pondering the roller-skating rink for Casper; must investigate, as we've never been there.

final playdate
Jul. 10th, 2008 03:41 pmWe kept Casper home from camp today so she could have a last playdate with her best friend from school, Logan. H is 6 and going into first grade and a darling - so grown up and considerate. He brought flowers! (From their garden.) Who says all 6 year old boys are wild and rough? In this pairing, Casper is the wild one.
When Dillo wakes and Logan's aunt comes to get him, I am going off with the kids to ride the bus to work and say goodbye to my student employee, whose last day is today. Then we drop off the (late) videos at the other library and home for dinner. mr. flea went out in the car at 12:30 saying he wasn't coming back until his final draft was done and submitted. I hope this will occur before I am scheduled to leave for work at 7:30 tomorrow morning!
Kids need a bath, and I want to get them both down by 9 for SYTYCD. Then I'll watch and finish the quilt; I estimate 2 hours of binding sewing left, but maybe I can work fast.
We have NO PLAN for Dillo's birthday. I have a Little People train that we'd had hidden in the basement, and the quilt, and a book (a new Mo Willems). I may send mr. flea out to procure a stomp rocket. We also have 3 packages that came in the mail today, one of which is IMMENSE and marked fragile. But I need a plan for cake. Maybe just Whole Foods cupcakes? And ice cream.

yep, random virus rash
Jul. 13th, 2007 01:56 pmAlthough the doctor was nicely diligent about making sure it's not Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Also, the poor resident's last name is Pepper. DOCTOR Pepper, people. I'd have become a minister or a shoe salesman, man.
I meant to do a State of the Dillo for his birthday, and I just now discovered his top 2 molars are coming through, so it's time, eh?
Teeth: 10. Front 8 are fully in; 2 upper molars both through on outside edges.
Motion: Can stand alone for about 30 seconds, and sit down without crashing from a stand. Cruises well. Does not walk holding fingers at all. Crawls wicked fast.
Talk: Clearly says (with intent): uh-oh, mama. Might say with intent: dada, nana for nursie. Says without intent - lots and lots of other sounds. Clearly understands some of what we say to him. My favorite: teaching him to moo like a cow (I really need to upload this video to Youtube.)
Play: loves to put stuff in stuff. Loves wheeled things - to push cars around, to turn them over and spin the wheels. Really does seem to be "boy" playing, as opposed to Casper. But he does like her baby dolls (and especially to slobber on their big plastic heads.)
Eats: kind of erratic - less interested in self-feeding than Casper was. As a result he eats a lot at school, where they feed him, and less at home. Will completely snarf up fruit though - blueberries, grapes, cherries, watermelon, ripe peach. Does not like cheese or yogurt, but drinks milk and will beg for ice cream.
Has just started to how interest in watching TV/videos. Hates long car rides, and sometimes even short ones.

happy birthday Dillo!
Jul. 11th, 2007 03:07 pmOne year ago today, I had a little boy who looked like Winston Churchill: http://www.flickr.com/photos/casperflea/779158980/
He's much cuter now, except he has a rash everywhere: http://www.flickr.com/photos/casperflea/779158948/
Happy birthday, sweet Pete! We are hoping he feels better soon.
