Yesterday Casper awoke with her eyes gooped shut, so it was off to the doctor (the mean pediatrician I had an argument with over the phone when I wanted to leave the hospital after 24 hours was on weekend duty - she's got to be over 40 and was dressed in an outfit that would be too young on a 25 year old. Meow.). Since the otoscope turned up an ear infection as well as the goops (i.e. pinkeye), we got amoxicillin instead of the eye ointment. Eyes much less goopy today. It worries me that Casper is so prone to ear infections (okay, this is her 3rd, but that seems like a lot). Only sickly kids are supposed to get ear infections! Not my hardy New England stock!

Then a brief walk to the farmer's market where we ran out of cash after buying strawberries, sweet potatoes, and mixed greens, and ran into 8 sets of people we knew (my boss, woman from La Leche League (with kids), 3 different neighbors (2 with kids) plus 3 families I've met at the park (with kids)). It's a pretty small world I live in.

Trimmed back the japanse berry bush that grows in the front and has a tendency to be invasive. I have massive iris blooms in the flower bed (they didn't bloom there last year, the first year after I divided and moved them) - bicolor pale over very dark velvety purple, and huge yellow ones. Tulips are pretty much gone, but they lasted well thanks to the cool week. Picked some caterpillars off the broccoli, which are poking along - one oddly went to seed, and one has formed a tiny broccoli head, and the rest are just leaves. The first set of snow peas is blooming and making little peas, and the second pea planting is 3 inches or so tall. I built a trellis for pole beans out of some branches I carefully trimmed, a few nails, and some twine. It looks great (if a little lopsided) now but will undoubtedly fall over during an August thunderstorm. Did not plant beans yet. Did plant my calla lilies and dahlia in pots.

A bright sunny day today, but not too hot, after a week of (welcome) rain. We have a date later this afternoon in the park to eat cake and get a balloon for Molly's second birthday.

Casper highlights: said "face fuzz. face fuzz." this morning after mr. flea referred to his unshaven face. Says "whoa" spontaneously (are we raising a little Keanu?). When anxious, tends to put all 4 fingers in her mouth to suck/chew on. May yet turn into a finger sucker. Got applesauce in her hair on the left side and yogurt in her hair on the right side during lunch, while self-feeding, natch. Still will not keep ponytails in her hair for any length of time - doesn't she realize they're cute, and that she needs a girlie-signifier on days like today when she's dressed in a boy outfit?

Kids get LOTS more ear infections nowadays, and nobody knows why. Pediatricians are baffled.

I was gonna say she's building up antibodies for future hardiness.

I was gonna say, wasn't her hardy New England Stock mother prone to ear infections as a child, or am I misremembering?
