Actually, we were thinking witchcraft or something. The skull was buried alone (no body), upright. Only about a foot below ground surface, with nothing associated to date it, except we can be reasonably sure it was Byzantine or later. I never heard what the forensic anthropologist made of it (sex, what the hole was made by, whether it was made before or after death). IME a trepanning hole is usually made on the upper back of the skull, and is generally roundish. This was really a nail hole. It was freaky.
