(no subject)

Oh, help me. I am looking at Johnny's seeds (www.johnnyseeds.com). It will be six weeks before my average last frost date in approximately 10 days. But I only have about 10 square feet of garden right now (though I am planning to dig up another 20 or so). I want everything: shell peas, lettuces (about six), spinach, beets, carrots (completely impractical in my soil, but they have these adorable, practically round ones), french beans... Help me be restrained - seeds are so cheap it's easy to go nuts.

(It's supposed to be 60 degrees today and tomorrow. Who, me, spring fever?)

I ordered flowers yesterday, and dreamed about lettuce and tomatoes. I don't want much, really, just to grow my own lettuce and tomatoes. I have no garden plot at all, though, so it's a little daunting to consider. I wonder how well lettuce would grow in a windowbox?

Just fine - I've done it. They key is to buy seeds of a mesclun-type mix, not head lettuce. Then you just take out the scissors and trim it every week or so - we got enough for salads every other night for two people. Go for it! (For tomatoes in a container, I'd pick a cherry tomato variety - there are some that are especially adapted for containers).

Cool. Now I'm going to go look at lettuce. I was thinking of yellow and red cherry or pear tomatoes. I love those things and they're pretty.
