Is it silly to get Casper a passport now in case we want to go somewhere suddenly? I'm guessing she's already too old to travel on my passport with her birth certificate, which is I think how they do it with tiny tiny babies. Of course, am talking out of ass, so must now go to State Dept. web site to see.

Interesting. From www.state.gov: You have to have a passport, even if you are 3 days old. Both parents must be present (or submit notarized documents) when a minor under 14 applies for a passport, to prohibit flight in child custody battles, it looks like. Children 14-17 may not need parental permission to get a passport, though. And if you give birth while in a foreign country, you notify the nearest consulate using a special form: Consular Report of Birth of a Citizen of the United States of America , Form FS-240.

Huh.

I can apply for a passport for Casper at my local post office. It's $70.

Ooh, that brought back an unpleasant shiver. We were less than a month from rotating out of Germany back to the states, and out of the army. We had a half-day's drive to Munich every time we needed to have the US Consul handle something, must be done in person, and there was a glitch in StY's paperwork. I could see DH, me, and StE getting on the plane and waving bye-bye to StY, 15 mos. NOT. We got it sorted (obviously), but it was a wee bit harrowing at the time.
