Took Dillo to the dentist. He was very cooperative. He has cavities in 5-6 of his front teeth, deep enough that they should be filled. So, we're doing that in January.

The office does Versed sedation, and doesn't allow the parents back into the rooms. Cash, Steph, does this jive with your experiences of fillings in preschoolers? I felt good about the office and the dentist was clear and frank. It still won't be fun. Also, expensive.

And of course this is a parenting fail - several of the cavities are in full view on the front of his front teeth. He hates to brush teeth and doesn't really spit, so we have been lax and haven't done fluoridated toothpaste yet.

Argh, argh, argh.

That is in line with our experiences. Both times Ellie was sedated, I was asked to leave once she was settled. It was two different places but both were good experiences.

And your post makes me feel slightly better - I haven't posted about this yet but I saw a cavity on one of Frisco's molars. I took him in on Thursday and he has 3-4 cavities. He has an appointment next Tuesday with a dentist who does sedation. (ours does not but recommends it.) based on our experiences with Ellie, we will be doing sedation until the kids are older, despite the cost.

Now I need tips on night-weaning. Any good ones?

Oh, and due to paranoia from our experience with Ellie, I've been brushing Frisco's teeth with fluoride for 4 months, despite his inability to spit. I swear I was doing it twice a day working hard at it.

I was kind of crap at night weaning. For the little one I presume (are you progressing on weaning Ellie altogether?)? I would have a talk about no more milk when we're in bed. The problem is enforcement, which I would imagine would be especially hard if you're cosleeping (one of my big issues was always it's so easy to feed a kid to quiet at 2am if you're right there...). People who've had better success than me usually have a separate bed and send in the other parent.

Maybe they're old enough that you could move them both to a double bed, maybe a mattress on the floor? Then they'd have the comfort of cosleeping with each other, and you would have a little more distance. This was my intention with my kids, but I never ended up doing it, mostly because of the different bedtimes problem.

Thankfully, Ellie night weaned two years ago. And total weaning is going well. We ares till using Christmas as our end date but Ellie seems ready for it.

As for Frisco, I'm only pursuing this because of his teeth. We have an extra bed in our room. No one is using it right now so we may try that. Ellie night weaned when she spent a week with my parents at 2.5.
