I am reluctant to say so, because, you know, jinx, but so far today the kids have been affable, cooperative, and friendly with each other. In dramatic contrast to yesterday.

I got my breakfast in bed, with cornmeal waffles and strawberry compote. I talked to my mother. We spent some time on the porch in the cool of the morning. The kids watched a little TV, and allowed me to watch Ask this Old House. We went out for lunch at Cali 'n Titos. We went to Memorial Park and looked at the animals (there was a little whining at this point, but I can be pretty patient with a 2 year old who is whining because he is hot and we have no drink.) We went to Earth Fare and rehydrated the children, and I got a few things, including Fage yogurt and almond paste. Currently in the oven is this cake:

If it isn't as good as I am expecting, I will be crushed. I really like almondy baked goods. In 1994 I was working in Sicily and the town's signature pastry was a sort of almond cake/cookie, pasta di mandorle. I kind of never got over it. It comes well-recommended, anyway: http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2009/04/friday-cake.html

Mmmm, let me know how it turned out.

I just finished an excellent tarte citron from the neighbourhood bakery & am feeling pleasurably stuffed.

Alas, it was sort of wrong in several ways (though still good, and Dillo begged for more).

1. Too sweet - I think endemic to anything made mainly with marzipan, sugar, and egg. And I say this as a woman with a powerful sweet tooth.
2. Mine was dense and sticky. I think the fault lies in both my eggs - local free-range ones, and yolk-heavy, where the recipe needed the whites to get lift - and in the weather, which is humid and generally cake-fally.
