Okay, suddenly this weekend whenever music comes on the radio, even segueways between NPR pieces, Casper starts to grin and do a little wiggly sort of butt-dance. It is soooooo cute. So now I dance too when music comes on and we look at each other and grin and giggle. I put on funky modern french jazz this afternoon just to keep her wiggling.

The garden has had its classic late-summer catastrophes, as my gardens are wont to do. The tomato cages fell over the a rainstorm before our vacation, and I tugged them back up but knew they'd fall at the next strom, and they did. The plants are laden with tomatoes but before they get a chance to ripen the squirrels, rabbits, and assorted bugsies and birdies take their toll. I have two fully green unmolested better boys on the counter, but have discarded half-eaten at least another 8. Loys of unripe san marinos and some brandywines too. Next year to arrange the cages so if one goes it doesn't take the whole set down.

The cucumber sort of gave up the ghost for no reason. I pulled it out.

The zucchini is still going, still getting away from me. I harvested 3 ginormous ones. It is so sad.

I pulled out all the long-bolted lettuces that were just in because of laziness.

I ate one diminuitive carrot.

I pulled out the first set of beans. Maybe haricots verts are sensitive to heat? These were so unsatisfying - very tough and dry. Sort of like eating sticks. Maybe I'll try a more basic kind of bean next year. Second set of beans could be harvested now, if I thought it was worth it.

To do: plant fall crops of carrots and beets. Also probably the mesclun lettuces.
To wait on: fall crops of peas, spinach, lettuce. I think more like Sept. 15. or when pansies show up at the garden centers.

Yesterday our outing was to the NC Botanical garden in Chapel Hill - very very nice. Very different from Duke gardens. Then to Southern Season - I hadn't been since it moved. It's now in a schizophrenic mall, which has stores with $300 shoes and $150 adorable fleece coats for 3 year olds, and also a Waldenbooks and a discount sort of Walmart. I could easily drop several thousand dollars at Southern Season, between the kitchen gear and the wine and the coffee and the cheeses and the imported stuff. They have a whole aisle of mustard! As it was we just ate lunch.
