We need to buy a bed. I think we're going to buy something nice (i.e. a step up from Ikea, which has nothing I like) but not as nice as I'd really wanted (when I was 13, my mother gave me a set of post-it notes that read, "I have the simplest of tastes. I only want the best." What I really want is hand-made, cherry, and $3500.) I'm feeling like it's important, symbolically, to get a nice bed, for my marriage. Like we need a shared statement that's about us, not about the kids, because they are hogging up so much energy in our lives.

We're thinking of Sherwood in cherry. We both like the style of Calvin better, as well as the fact that it's solid wood, not solid wood and veneers, but we both prefer cherry to maple. Thoughts?

I think they both look nice.

There's a place down the street from us that sells locally-made cherry furniture; the price point is more-or-less in the neighborhood of what you're looking at, I think. If you're curious I can find out if they ship.

We have a big cherry bed that my dad made us as an anniversary present one year, so we were looking at potentially-matching pieces (and ended up getting a couple of unfinished furniture kits, staining to match, and making new trim, which worked out pretty well and was easier on the budget.)

Sure, ask away. Better yet, do they have a web site?

They are both gorgeous. We are also cherry wood people, but I think I like that dark stain on the Calvin better - really sophisticated. Either is a great choice, though.

I have become a mahogany snob. I don't think they even make beds in mahogany any more, and if they do I am sure they do it for eleventy zillion dollars a pop, but it's so pretty. I suspect I am also developing a dark-wood bias, as walnut is next on my list.

Of the two, I like Sherwood better; I don't know if that's the staging of the picture, but it just looks roomier and more hospitable. Am I right that cherry basically matches the nice dining room chairs?

Nope, those are maple.

I really like the look of cherry, and it gets better as it ages, even as veneer. I think if I had it to do over, I'd have used a cherry stain on my maple bookcases, then worried about staining the trim work in the room to match, rather than the other way around.

That said, I prefer the look of the Sherwood anyway, so for me there would be no debate as to which to buy.

I can't tell if I prefer the Sherwood because I generally prefer light woods or because I actually like the style better, but it gets my vote.

I like the idea behind y'all getting a nice marriage bed to remind you you aren't just parents. It's both new-agey self-help relationship approved (or sounds like it oughta be) and niftily traditional.

Can't really tell on the beds what I like better, but I definitely like the symbolism of the idea!!
