Mother and I had a Talk last night about her projecting "how one is supposed to feel" onto real people, who feel any damn way they want, at important moments like these. Sometimes her ideas are shockingly 1950s, you know? She seemed to think you should sit in the front row at Mr.'s thesis defense in your butterfly-collar dress and pumps, smiling beneficently.

I personally think a bit of relieved effwording is not out of the question, and that butterfly-collar dresses would not be flattering on you (to say nothing of the pumps).
