UGA libraries is unwilling to do a phone interview. So if I want to even try to get this job, we will have to get down there, again, soon. Have I mentioned it is a 6 hour drive and we have small children? I don't do this for fun, people.

Worse, mr. flea is throwing cold water on the house thing. His sister called last night to tell him that she and his parents had discussed things and wanted to let him know that they were concerned that this was too expensive for us. So he ran some numbers (NOW he chooses to run some numbers?) and thinks it will be tight on his salary alone. But, he didn't consider my salary, and he did include child care for Dillo, and if I'm not working, we won't need child care. (Psychiatric care, yes, but not child care). Also, he is paranoid that the sellers are hiding something about the foundation. He admits it is sort of paranoia, but can't let it go. (We are, of course, planning an inspection.)

I was pretty happy for an hour yesterday, in a sort of "oh my god, we're actually going to have nice things" sort of way.

Today I have a headache and am contemplating various escapist fantasies.

We make payments on a mortgage that's just about exactly that much, on just about exactly that salary. It's a little tight, some months, but we get by all right.

And the inspector will check the foundation.

And...not knowing your SIL, I will refrain from comment.

For some reason, it does not surprise me that mr. flea is getting cold feet, perhaps because I imagine I would do the same - and focus on something random like the foundation. Buying a house is a big step and you're moving for his job, which he probably has some nervousness about.

Do you think the interview and inspection could happen at the same time? Or does the timing not work out?

(And does it not seem apropos that you are moving to a place named Athens, given your classical background?)

Sorry to hear about the phone interview. I hope you can figure out a way to get down there.

We couldn't sleep for three nights after our offer to buy this house was accepted, rather like the way (I found) even a long-planned pregnancy is scary once confirmed -- instantly the hypothetical becomes very, very real. It would be surprising if you and/or mr flea hadn't been attacked by paranoia.

I'm not surprised his parents are having cold feet! When you look up risk-aversion in the dictionary, their pictures are right there in the margin.

There's a time and a place for paranoia (and hurray that this is not occurring in, say, the presence of our mother!), but acknowledging that's what it is, and moving on, are also good things.

I was vaguely thinking that you could be the one who goes down for the inspection, and then has a job interview, but... that's a lot harder if, once you arrive, you don't have driving capability. Just getting Athens is not the whole of the battle. (Rent a bike!! Maybe that is too silly.)

Since mr. flea is the one who has a civil engineering degree, AND is the one paranoid about the foundation, he HAS to be there for the inspection. It's looking like we will all go. Again.

Mother is already planning what money I am going to spend, natch. So far she is only up to garden plants and linens, but I am sure she will think bigger soon.

How did mr. flea's sister manage to get a vote in all this? Actually, I know the answer to that, having had my own in-laws once. The thing to explain to mr. flea is that the housing market in Ohio is very different than the one you described for Athens, so while his family's concerns may be very well-founded for what they are experiencing, it's likely different for you guys.

If there's a problem with the foundation, the inspector will find it, especially if mr.flea is there to voice his concerns.
