Pants 3: The rest of the pants
Mar. 2nd, 2008 08:01 pmI should have focused on one other kind of pants, like khakis, but instead I tried on a mishmash of things. Some photographed very badly, too. Just for the record, here's what I tried:
J. Crew:
This was the first time I'd actually tried anything on in a J. Crew in years - I used to buy their t-shirts in high school, but they are too expensive for me and everything has looked really young to me for a long time now. But I was recommended them as a good source of tall pants, so.
Wool dress pants, city fit. I think these: http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod86005191&catId=cat300225
These were really low on the hip and really really fine wool, and not lined. Not only were they hello hip bones, they were hello panty lines. I was thinking, what does one wear them with, Spanx? God forbid, a thong (they're *wool*)? The fit was okay, and the city fit *looked* okay, I just felt like they were falling off.

Dress pants, I think cotton/some linen?, favorite fit. I think they were these: http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod90895191&catId=cat300198
These fit funny. There was a lot of gapping in the back at the waist, and let me be the first to say that this was an entirely novel experience with me and pants - I usually have a lot of fabric flapping around at the hips. I like the wide legs. They look kinda good on, though. I think.

I looked for regular old khakis in favorite fit, but all I could find were skinny capris and these: http://www.flickr.com/photos/casperflea/2306465252
which I can't find on the web site. They said 'regular fit" and had waist and inseam sizing, and I didn't like them.
Off the sale rack, I grabbed these: http://www.flickr.com/photos/casperflea/2306464896
because I am a total sucker for sailor pants. They had the same hip and panty problems as the first pair.
(The store was WAY crowded, with clothes, not people, and everything was in stacks on tables with almost nothing hanging up, so it was very hard and annoying to find sizes, even though the woman was being very nice.)
J. Jill:
I kind of disliked everything I tried on here. Which was a surprise, since J. Jill has been my go-to store the last few years.
Silk blend drapey fine pants. These:

I liked the shape of these, but they were too snug and I worried about the drape and my butt. (You are sensing a theme here, no?) Also, if I have the right ones, they don't come in talls.

Khaki sailor pants. These: http://www.jjill.com/jjillonline/product/itempage.aspx?item=A113886&P
Too small, and this is the way NOT to do sailor pants, people. No, no, no.

Tab-waist basic khakis. These: http://www.jjill.com/jjillonline/product/itempage.aspx?item=C80886&PFID=14&BID=S2008061162658292B4C224A90425E909E7A&h=M&sk=M
I had been looking at these in the catalog, sure they were going to be the ones. Nope.

Gap:
The whole family was in the dressing room for part of this. Oh, that was fun.
Wide-leg cotton pants. These: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=11557&pid=498460
I liked these, but I wasn't raving about them. I'd like to try them again, though; I was very distracted.

Straight leg cotton pants. These, I think: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=15683&pid=498366
These were too slim though the thigh for me, and I all I can think about is how short they are (which, talls online, shouldn't matter! But did in my impression of them.)

Sears, Lands' End:
The children were basically running amok at this point. I tried on FAST and took crappy pictures.
Wide leg weekend khakis. These: http://www.landsend.com/pp/WideLegWeekendChinoPants~182192_59.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::LST&CM_MERCH=BNR_00002_00002_0019722&INT_CAMP=00002_00002_001972
They didn't really fit right - too loose in the hips, too tight in the waist - but I actually quite like the way they look on me in the picture. They do have talls online.

Green basic khakis. Sort of like this: http://www.landsend.com/pp/WeekendChinoPants~182204_59.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::LST&CM_MERCH=IDX_00002__0000001019&origin=index
These fit worse - looser in the hips - but again, they don't look bad on, except for being too short by a mile. (Also, "sits below waist"? My Aunt Sally, no they don't.)
