Born on Tuesday, to coworkers Natalie and Henry, a son, Rafael.

The Social Security data for 2006 came out today: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

Girls' top 10 (with numbers of children under 5 I know with these names):
Emily (0), Emma (0), Madison (0), Isabella (1 Isabelle), Ava (1 Eva), Abigail (1), Olivia (2), Hannah (1), Sophia (3), Samantha (0).

Boys' top 10 (with ditto):
Jacob (1), Michael (0), Joshua (0), Ethan (0), Matthew (1), Daniel (0), Christopher (0), Andrew (1), Anthony (0), William (1).

And yet I know multiples of: Annabel, Esme, Alex(-ander, -a, -andra, Alec), Aiden (various spellings), Evan (boy and girl), Luke/Lucas, Leo, Rowan, Ell( -a, -ie, iot, a girl).

I guess it all depends on your niche.

Note: Dillo's name is still dropping - down to 167; Casper's name is still rising - it's 65 now, just behind Trinity and ahead of Kylie, but Jane, for example, is 478th and falling.)

I know boys with almost all of those names (no Jacob and no Andrew, at least none under 5). As for the girls, 1 Madison, 2 Isabellas, 1 Eva, 3 Olivias, 2 Hannahs, and 2 Sophies.

My son's name is popular--about 50th. I personally know *of* two others but I haven't met them yet. And my daughter's name is 770something on the list, which may explain why people keep having a hard time spelling it even though we used the standard spelling. Maybe if we had named her Frauncesse.

I am a lost art!!

Amazing how quickly Jessica fell out of the top ten. Not in time for next year's first grade class, I bet, but. Also, amazing how stable the male toppers are (and weirdly, only two of the four gospellers are on it).

I'm surprised Madison is still on there! Huh.

The name we're 90 percent sure we'll use dropped a little and is still in the 300s, which made me really happy. Our boy name is 26 or so, but we knew it was more common when we picked it.

I'm really pleased she won't be one of five girls with her name in her grade.

Ralael, eh? I wonder if he's named after angels, artists, or turtles? (Or relatives, but I prefer the mutant turtle explanation.)

I'm kind of surprised that David's not in the top 10. Maybe the large number of David's in my acquaintance is a generational thing.

Rafael is the son of a librarian with a Mexican mother and a history PhD candidate. I'm voting turtles.

Addison is rising fast, too.

Srsly, if you wanted a kid with a unique name, you could call her Jennifer (51), or Heather (341!!), or Melissa (117), or Michelle (80), or Kristin (574) - all fast fallers right now. I mean, Trinity and Nevaeh are higher than all of those but Jennifer, and they aren't even names!

You realize you have just hexed yourself, and she will be one of 3 Kathleens (371, and off the top of my head, though I like it.)

I'm just glad to see Olivia has peaked and is going back down.

Man, Matilda isn't anywhere in the top 1000 for the past 15 years.

Hey, haven't seen you in ages -- congratulations! I'm so happy for you and Patrick!

I shall have to tell my Mom (an Evelyn for the past 84 years) that her name is getting popular again....

Bite your tongue.

But seriously, if she is one of three Kathleens (or whatever) I guess I'll just content myself with the thought a lot of other mothers have good taste.

Um, Trinity is still a rather popular name in its Spanish form -- Trinidad?

There are a couple of factors: Evelyn fits with several sound trends (starting names with a vowel, the V in girls' names is popular, and the -en/-lyn ending is popular), plus the naming of daughters after the parents' grandmothers (mr. flea's grandmother, b. 1913, was Evelyn, and the name was in the top 20 in that decade.)

In English, though, it spikes really strongly the year after The Matrix came out! I think some people who choose the name do so because of its Christian connotations, but the movie gave people the idea it could be a name in English.

Sci has been in the top 10 for years but boys' name popularity doesn't change much. That said, Ethan? That was a surprise. Sys is in the top 150 and rising.
