It's been a rather undistinguished spring for fashion - little in the way of trends or interesting/innovative dressing.

New things I have been seeing:
Black leggings, both ankle length and capri, especially paired with jeans miniskirts (mid-thigh or above, straight).
Jeans worn capri-length with a turned-up cuff of about 4 inches.
Little dainty spring dresses, often knit, generally very short and tight-bodiced, but somewhat fluttery and feminine.

Things said to be trendy that I am not seeing:
Skinny jeans. We are still heavily boot-cut.
80s style stuff in general. We have preppy-80s, but not Flashdance-80s.

Things I saw last year that I am not seeing much any more:
Knee-length shorts.
Knit gauchos.
80s-style hoop earrings.
Scuff-style sandals with sequins on the toes.

Things I saw last year that continue in force:
Ballet flats. In general they seem plainer now - more simple black leather, less tweed/sparkle.

Things that will never die:
Rainbow flipflops.
Uggs.
Shorts and sweatpants with things written on the butt.
Layered bras and tank tops with multi-colored straps on the shoulders.

I got my hair cut again last night (note to amych: Bobby has moved to Stage 1) and am wearing a camel knit sleeveless tank with a deep notch at the neck, a trumpet-shaped rayon skirt in camel with white polka dots, and black strappy Danskos. I should have worn a bright necklace, or lipstick; I need more color near the face, since the outfit basically matches my hair.

ooh Fashion post!!!

Why won't the UGGS die die die??! Don't the kids know how awful wearing them makes them look? sheesh.

Love the capri cuffed jeans! And (even though i can rarely find ones that fit me) love the spring dresses! Hate the leggings. Hates!

Glad the gauchos are gone!

I have no software companies in Jessup, MD fashion news to report. Except, my poor co-worker, who is presenting at our User's Conference this week has just discovered the pain of trying to match a fugly man-cut company shirt with anything and not look like a fashion-challenged waitress at TGIF-type restaurant.

Skinny jeans are big here on the young'uns. The knee-length shorts ("city shorts", bermuda shorts, whatever you call them) are still around too, but not on me -- I don't need to look like I got cut off at the knees.

I've seen skinny jeans. On our interns and on campus. But yes, bootcut still reigns supreme.

Glad to hear no flashdance, no skinny jeans. Because preppy I can handle. Flashdance NSM.

Thank God the gauchos are disappearing. So, so ugly.

SF update:

Skinny jeans like WOAH. Suddenly, they're everywhere.
Preppy '80s stuff, yup. Lots of alligator shirts and sweaters.
Leggings, occasionally.
Yesterday I got on a crowded elevator at work and was the only woman not wearing ballet flats.
Pretty spring dresses.

Uggs are getting blessedly scarce, except downtown, for which I blame the suburbanistas.

New plague: Crocs and Crocs knock-offs, with little buttons and jewels and charms in the ventilation holes on top. I know they're the most comfortable shoe on the planet, but they are SO FUGLY.

And lastly, the downtown H&M has two huge floors full of dresses and tops that you'd swear were maternity wear.

Yay you with the haircut and the polka-dot skirt!

I gotta say, Crocs on little bitty kids just charm me. I am thinking of getting Casper some supermarket knock-offs.

The students don't wear them much. They do wear big bright rubber rain boots, little kid style, when it rains.

Oh! I love the rubber rain boot trend! In small doses anyway.

Well, on little bitty kids, sure. But little bitty kids can wear anything. I saw a little bitty kid a couple months ago in a flowing flowered top under a pink parka, toddler-sized tweed formal shorts, and pastel pink Uggs, and she was heart-meltingly adorable. On a grownup, that outfit would have been a crime against humanity.

Little bitty kids are tricksy like that.

I've seen two art school kids in the last week wearing overalls withthe flaps hanging down. So 80's. (Or is the early 90's?) But two's a coincidence, three's a trend, I guess, so I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.

Like, one side unhooked? Like a Dexey's Midnight Runners video?

Otherwise I'm imagining their pants falling down.

No, the front flap hanging totally down. If the overalls are tight enough around the waist, they'll stay up.
