So, the baby who died over the weekend was in Dillo's classroom. She was only there Tuesday/Thursday, and usually left quite early, so I never saw her, though mr. flea may have, in the mornings.

They don't know yet what she died of, but it seems to have been an infectious disease. Symptoms are high fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy - your basic baby bug. The center said they disinfected the room Monday, and they usually run a tight ship on cleanliness anyway.

I wasn't at all worried for Dillo yesterday - I assumed the baby had died in an accident, or of SIDS, or something - it hadn't occurred to me it could be something infectious. I guess that was dumb. I'm not too worried now. But. A little.

This kind of thing scares me for Ellie, even though her sickness was in the *past*. Motherhood does weird things. I feel so awful for the family of the baby - it seems like babies in the US just shouldn't die of stuff like that.

Like gchick said, though, I'm sure they are really good at disinfecting and so on at the daycare. The seem topnotch to begin with and I know that at Ellie's daycare, at least, they disinfect every afternoon afterevery goes home, even without scary diseases.

Oh, I have been thinking of you nonstop - the girl's name was Ellie, for one thing - and how lucky you were (even with hospital-borne germs, let alone hassle.) I feel terrible for people I don't know; imagine if it were our Ellie!

I"m so glad I heard about this after my Ellie got home. Several times while we were there, I reassured myself with "the doctors don't sem that worried nd normally healthy toddlers don't just die." Such a sad story.
