garden update
Jun. 14th, 2006 06:11 amWe've had a lot of rain lately; overnight mild thunderstorms, and today is supposed to be Alberto rain much of the day. I believe much of the region is under a flood watch AND a drought at the same time, which is amusing.
The garden is happy enough. Old things:
Two of my four tomatoes have begun to set fruit.
Zucchini has 3 baby zukes growing.
Eggplant has flowered but isn't doing much; partly I think it is too shaded by the mesclun lettuce which I should rip out but it's flourishing because of our cool (75-85) weather.
Carrots 1 are going gangbusters; I did another thinning pass last night and got a few 2-inch babies, which Casper claimed and ate right up.
Beets 1 are a sad little area.
Pole beans are doing okay, the ones that are left, and are about to start blooming.
Basil is telling me to to make pesto.
Calla Lily is loving life and has about 6 new shoots, which is nice because I thought I'd killed it over the winter.
Lillies in the flower bed are blooming; this is the second wave, and they mostly are trumpet-shaped, white to pale pink.
Perennial Four O'Clocks came out of nowhere again, under the rose and in the flower bed; not blooming yet.
Newish things:
The Burpee carrots I planted in a pot have come up vigorously but are still too small to thin.
First two clumps of canteloupe are up and happy.
Burpee bush beans came up well and very fast, a few eaten but most are several inches tall.
Brand new things:
Planted last of Johnny's carrots.
Planted more Johhny's beets; there are some left in the packet I may save for fall.
Planted more Burpee carrots; there are more seeds than I know what to do with.
Planted 3 more clusters of canteloupe.
Planted Burpee marigolds, the little traditional ones.
Planted some old sunflower seeds I had kicking around.
