The things veejane and I are quoting at each other in the comments on the preceding post are snippets from a record album we had as kids in the late 1970s by George Cromarty, titled "The only One." It turns out said Mr. Cromarty was also the co-author of the infamous "plastic jesus" song: "I don't care if it rains or freezes, long as I got my plastic jesus sitting on the dashboard of my car," which was anoter staple bit of sung verse in my childhood. (Actually, I kind of thought my mother made it up.)

It's one of those songs whose origins were virtually impossible to track down pre-internet (unless you're name is Hec, I suppose), and it was a song that you always heard second hand, usually right before someone broke into "Oh, Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz / My friends all have Porches, I must make amends." Or vice versa.
