Thanksgiving day was spent in a grump of magnificent proportions, only slightly mollified by the Macy's parade and Dog Show. (mr. flea asked Casper recently what she wanted for Christmas. "A puppy!") Then lateish, off to the Turks' house, which was fine, not great. Good food, lot of people but 90% of then Turkish and already knew each other so they chatted in Turkish. Two fellows introduced themselves as John, which is of course not a Turkish name, so I was wondering what they could be really named. I've never known Turks to take "American" names they way some Asian immigrants do. There was a little boy and he followed Casper about and she climbed the stairs and ate grapes and breadsticks. The turkey had zata'ar stuffed under the skin. MTV was on in the background and I felt SO OLD.

Yesterday we Christmasified the house (tabletop fake tree and decorations up, stockings hung, lights over the mantle) and got started planning gifts, which necesitated a 2 hour phone call with mr. flea's family. To the mall via foot late in the afternoon, where we watched the Bearstein Orchestra (animatronic bears play Xmas carols; small people love it) and got Casper's feet measured - now wearing a 9.5. Stride Rite shoes being shockingly expensive we did not buy, but tried on some Lands' End mocs at Sears and I think we'll order a pair of those - they seemed to fit well despite being a 10!! and were the easiest to get on of everything we tried. Got tired, ate Dairy Queen and came home. Made yummy pasta with beans and kale and built a fire.

Today got Casper to eat something by making bacon, have tried to straighten some mess about the place. I started talking housecleaning and mr. flea said, "I want to do something FUN today." So we need to think of something fun (in addition to the very necessary housecleaning - the shower curtain is becoming sentient).

There's a Turkish name that sounds almost identical to John.

It is, in fact, my friend Gorkem's brother's name, which is how I know this. Hmm. He's in your neck of the woods, come to think of it. I wonder if he was one of your Johns.

Ah, maybe it was "Can" and I was hearing "John". Makes much more sense.
