5pm: Leave work, get in bus. Torrential rain threatening and I have no coat and no umbrella. My neighbor is on the bus and presses her umbrella on me, since I need to go to the Whole Foods and get milk, and she is going straight home.
5:20: Get to Whole Foods, buy 1 gallon whole milk and 1 pint Ben and Jerry's (vanilla with brownies and raspberry). Get paper bag to carry them home.
5:30: 1 block from home, bag splits at bottom, gallon of milk bounces on sidewalk and opens and spills 1/4 of its contents before I grab it. Walk rest of the way home, still almost running so as to get home before Casper, sweaty in 75 degree heat plus humidity, carrying my heavy bag, an open gallon of milk, etc. Happily it is still not raining.
5:35: Arrive at home. Nanny is not, as I had feared, waiting for me in the driveway with Casper in her car. Put milk and B&J away, put water on to boil for noodles, strip off hot clothes, curse the fact that I NEVER get my New Yorker before Thursday anymore.
5:40: Nanny arrives with Casper. Casper wants to nurse. Nurse Casper between cooking noodles.
5:50: Bribe Casper with olives to eat dinner. Casper eats olives, cheap Parmesan cheese with a spoon, and because I am clever and make it a game, about half of her pasta. I eat noodles and the boring soup that will not be consumed. Freeze rest of soup. Casper drinks milk from a big girl cup but then spills most of it in her chair; cries. I mop up.
6:30: Casper wants to watch a movie. We watch A Bug's Life. I read the City Paper on the floor and do various picking up & folding laundry type errands around the house during the non-scary bits. I hold her during the grasshopper scenes and Flaming Death. I eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's; Casper has bites, each time asking for a bite as "nursie."
8:00: Change Casper into jammies, read George and Martha and Toot and Puddle, nurse, fetch two cups of milk (sippy cups), deal with 2 instances of bed failure, comfort the crying scared girl who is in the chair in her room and re-insert her in bed again, this time with brave dog to protect her.
8:40: Call nanny, discuss possible future plans. (She wants to work only 30 hours, talks about going home at 2:30. When asked about possible baby, says she'd love to "help us out" but I'm not entirely reassured after the Baby Milo fiasco of last summer. Keeps saying she'd love to take Casper to preschool. Appears to think we are made of money. Nothing resolved, but the conversation makes me more pro-child care center.)
9:00: Worry. Get in bed. Worry. Am awake for some time worrying.
10:45: Casper is crying. I get in her bed and pat her. She settles. I fall asleep in her bed. I wake up with completely numb hands (??? I am lying on my back!) twice in the night.
4:45: Casper wants to nurse. Nurse. Go back to my own bed.
6:30: Casper is crying. Wants to nurse in my bed, which we briefly do. She wants milk in a cup. I get her milk and then run to put out the trash and recycling. When I come back she is crying. I settle her down but she is really up for the day. We snuggle in the living room. She bugs the cat while I eat breakfast. I pack lunches. We listen to Sesame Street. I take a shower and get dressed. I get her dressed. We read books. She wants candy. She gets a flashlight to play with. Nanny arrives to pick her up.
8:40: I leave for work.

I guess it depends on what you're used to and what you want. I believe in co-parenting (and usually Wednesday is mr. flea's day to pick up Casper at 2:30 and make dinner for us.) I still do more at home than mr. flea does, but I don't do more than I'm comfortable with, and if things seem unfair to me, then I have a sit-down with mr. flea and we re-adjust.

Yeah. I guess that's how normal, functional grown ups work.
