technology failures; opportunities
Oct. 4th, 2005 11:26 amThings that have broken recently:
Our dryer. Current solution: Mr. Sunshine. Longer-term solution: craigslist. We're waiting for the right one to come up: newish, Whirlpool, large capacity, under $150. mr. flea insists we must buy a Whirlpool, to match our new/used washer.
Our VCR. Current solution: don't watch videos. Longer-term solution: did you know they make combo VCR/DVD players for under $100? Hello, Christmas present from in-laws! Added bonus: now we'll be able to watch DVDs on our TV, not just on the computer.
Since both items are, conservatively, 15 years old, I shouldn't blame the technology gods. I mean, the dryer is Harvest Gold. We're lucky it lasted as long as it did. (We're also lucky it didn't set our house on fire or shock me to death, but that's another story.)
In non-broken crap news, I am being strongly encouraged to be a guinea pig in a new program the Association of Research Libraries is considering, a 1-year certificate program to encourage people with advanced degrees in academic fields to try out librarianship.
Advantages: payment of tuition (but not fees) for 5 classes at schmancy Library School, paid 6-week internship of my devising, cash for a trip to visit a library, prestige.
Disadvantages: out-of-pocket costs of about $2000; probably will need to cut back hours at work taking another financial hit; complications to Project Baby 2.0; complications to Project Get That Man Finished With His Degree and Into a Job.
We're in the having coffee and talking about it stage, and yet simultaneously the send me a resume and letter of interest by Thursday stage. The person in charge of the new program is a former colleague who did an MLS part-time while working and raising 3 kids, and she wants it to be reasonable for people with jobs and lives, which is a good thing for me. She's really gung-ho about me, which is pretty nice, I must say.
In work news, I am now tense and DUSTY.

Date: 2005-10-04 05:37 pm (UTC)If you were in DC I have a VCR to get rid of. But it's so not worth the shipping, and I probably won't be down there again until November. I'll let you know if I am, though!
