I've just mowed (most of) the lawn for the second time - Casper is sleeping with a blueberry mouth and so sweet in oshkosh shorties and a onesie she picked out herself. She was already dressed this morning but got into her drawers and came out with the onesie, so I indulged her and changed her. When she was dropped off at my work at noon she said "Hi ducks!" and chased them around the quad a bit.

It's going to hit 80 today, which for this New Englander is summer weather so we have as usual skipped much of the spring. Daffodils are fading, apple and pear trees are starting to leaf out, tulips are blooming (though just beginning in my slow yard). Redbud (which I like more each year) is in bloom and wisteria is starting to come out. The dogwoods are in the tiny-flower stage.

My first pea plantings are 4 inches tall and about to find their supports. I planted a second crop - probably rather belatedly - on Sunday with Casper helping (mostly by saying "seed! seed!" and walking in the furrows.) Planted some mesclun mix too.

A week ago Tuesday I planted my cimbing rose and clematis pairing from White Flower Farm, and the rudbeckia. Waiting for even warmer weather (it's still 40s at night, though I'll probably do them this weekend) are the calla lilies and dahlia, both of which are going in pots.

My raspberry chair will be delivered on Sunday between 3 and 7 (at shocking expense - a quarter the cost of the chair. If we go to Hickory again I'm renting a minivan.) I've bought fabric to slipcover my old slipper chair, bought at the Bryn Mawr Junior League Thrift Shop in the fall of 1990, a dark blue-green cotton twill which said dry clean only but which I have now put through the washer and dryer with no negative effects. I also bought red binding to finish Casper's quilt - I'm binding it although it's not entirely quilted, since this way we'll use it, and I can go on quilting it until Kingdom Come.

Meatballs are in the oven.

So I create my lttle space of order in this realm of chaos.

I think Casper is having a difficult age/phase - her renewed trouble sleeping, her unusual clinginess, wanting to nurse a lot and in public (on the bus today!), her irritability with other kids at the park, new tendency to hit (she says "ow" while she hits you, and when you say "no hitting" she smacks herself on the head and says "ow") all add up to the beginning of the twos I think. We shall gird our loins and carry on.
