Heh. I realized you're assuming that everyone else there will be sports fans and I will not. In fact, if we watch basketball, it will be because I suggest it, and I will probably know the most about it. If I suggest it, it will be so that I can read in peace while sort-of watching, and not be prevented from reading by the need to not appear rude.
Now, in my family, as mr. flea noted, "You travel 500 miles so you can all read in the same room." It's funny 'cause it's true.
