No, this is not a rabid anti-red state post.

It is about the true evil that lurks in NC: MOLD

I hate it. I took some of Casper's toys out of circulation for a while - she has too many - and when I opened the box, which had been sitting under her crib for a couple of months, the toys were ALL MOLDY. Now, I know she licks things, and I hadn't washed them before I put them away, so they were a great growth medium, but YUCK.

Places I have found mold growing in the last couple of weeks: inside drawers in the dining room. On the leg of the futon in the baby's room. To say nothing of the continual battle in my bathroom. YUCK.

Also, it makes mr. flea sick.

Seriously, if we can't find a way to lick this, it will be a big motivator to move back north. Or to the Sahara.

I had a mold problem down in my basement with a set of particle board shelves. Apparently the glue in particle board is a growth medium. It was nasty, because it was worse on the bottom of the shelves where I couln't see it. I tried sealing the shelves with urethane, and painting them, but it didn't work. I finally just moved that set of shelves to the attic, and replaced it with heavy-duty plastic shelving.

Would a dehumidifier help any?

I've never lived for an extended time in a high-humidity region. I know that lots of sunlight will really help with the mold issue as well.

Don't move here. I'm fighting the same battle. It's so gross!
