Five questions from [livejournal.com profile] stephl:

1. Do you miss anything about Cincinnati? If so, what?

First and foremost, Thai Express. You can throw Ambar India in there too. Graeter's. The movie theater.

We had a good community of friends when we lived there, but relatively few of them still live there now (perils of grad school). I'd love to live in the same city as K. & D. (okay, they live in Kentucky, but whatever), and my not-really-evil-just-a-little-grumpy-male twin A., though.

It's cheap as hell.

I always kind of liked visiting my family in Mariemont and smelling the Keebler factory. Also, they have a Graeter's there, too. (Am I all about the food? Yes, I am.)

2. This is probably something people ask you all the time, but what has been most surprising about parenthood so far?

I can't tell you how many thank-you notes I have written in the past 6 months. I was surprised to find how many friends I had, and how much joy my baby has brought to them. I was sort of like "oh, baby, lots of people have them," but to many people it's like magic. She has definitely brought my somewhat fractured family closer together.

3. What are 5 books everyone should read in their adult life?

This was the stumper. I decided, finally, that people should read whatever the heck they want, and I'm not gonna tell 'em what that ought to be. I do feel strongly, though, that someone should make newly-independent adults read a good book about adult finances. For me it was Making the Most of Your Money by Jane Bryant Quinn, and it was exactly what I needed. Though, if one's parents aren't squicky about teaching financial savvy, this book could be superfluous. I also benefited greatly from reading Miss Manners, as I was raised in a barn and remarkably naïve about human relations. These two authors taught me how to be a better, or at least minimally functioning, adult. Take that, great literature!

Now, five books I loved that you might or might not love too? I'd be happy to supply titles.

4. If I came to NC, what would we do? What would you show me? (Other than Casper, who I would have to play with for a very long time.)

If you were visiting – yay! Because I could make bacon and eggs for breakfast. Or scones, if you're not too low carby. We'd take Casper to the Sarah Duke Gardens, especially if it was spring and the wisteria was blooming. There are things you'd probably know – cherry trees – and some stuff you might find exotic, like magnolias and a cool section that's japanese style. We could shop, though there's no place that funky. I suppose Morgan Imports would be my choice – it is a little bit funky and has a good mix of stuff, from very cute baby socks to futons to a great housewares section. Like I don't already have enough dishes! It's good for the gifties. We'd definitely go to a Durham Bulls game (although I'm told the old stadium was more atmospheric – we can go peer in, as it’s still used for local league play). And for barbecue – The Q Shack, or the (more famous, but I've never been to) Mama Dip's. Then if you still had energy and I had to put Casper to bed, I'd hand you off to the NCistas who'd take you out drinking and dancing, if you wanted, or to sit around a good pub and discuss superheroes – your call.

5. I seem to keep asking this question, but -- are you in NC for good? Or do you plan to move to another state at some point?

Not sure. Mr. flea is in gradual school, and should finish in summer 2005. Maybe add another year in there. So we're here until then, most likely. After that? It wouldn't kill me to stay, if he can find a job he can stand down here. I feel settled in many ways, and will be more so in 2 years, and moving as an adult is hard – it takes a lot longer to make friends after you're about 25, in my experience. But I'd also really like to be closer to family – ideally mine and his both, though that's not very geographically likely (Ohio and Mass.), closer to the ocean, and someplace that has rather more of a winter. And mr. flea's dream job is with the EPA, and the EPA's water research facility is in – wait for it – Cincinnati.

1. Who is your most eccentric relative?
2. You have $10,000 that MUST be donated to charity. Which do you pick, and why?
3. You seem very open-to-anything & free-spirited. What wouldn't you do? Any phobias?
4. When did you become aware of your sexuality? Was it something you always knew, or did you wake up one day in college all "Hello! Gay now!"
5. Imagine yourself in 15 years. What do you see?
