My question is, why bother getting out of bed? On the rare occasions that I have needed to scare the crap out of my cat, I have just bolted upright in bed, and she ceases and desists immediately.
Apparently I have an easily-cowed cat.
What could you stock by your bedside to throw at cats, that you wouldn't regret throwing? I was going to suggest something like whole walnuts, but then you might step on them later and go down anyway.
