This is totally fascinating. I wish my family history went back this far-- we kind of disappear a little before the turn of the last century. I keep bugging my grandmother to give me the family photos to scan, at least, so my mother can ID everyone in them, but most of that's 1940s and later. There are a bunch of pictures of my grandmother from the 20s where we don't know anything about the other people in the photos.
