We had a similar thing this summer from an electrician. I think we finally decided we'd have to phone around and get another couple of estimates to comp, or else learn to do the work ourselves (we think it's about a half-day's work, which should not be $780).
We've had good luck putting away for long-term savings by having a little bit taken directly out of C's paychecks before we even see it, just like we do for the retirement savings. It doesn't look like much for the first six months, but after a year or two it's pretty impressive.
