You know how sometimes you suddenly feel like crap (mentally) for no logical reason? The trigger today is a Facebook conversation, continuing the conversations at the school playdate and birthday party last weekend, about the summer camp scramble. All the other families spent hours this weekend waiting in long contested lines for all the best summer camps, and all they could talk about was how stressful it has been and how so many more people are signing up for camp this year, perhaps because they are not taking long vacations because of the economy, and would they get a spot? We didn't have a lot to say in any of these conversations. Because we are going with the YMCA, whose sign-up starts this weekend. Because the in-demand camps are not full-day and don't cover the whole summer, and since we both work full-time, we need something that does both. (Also, several of them don't take kids who aren't yet 6, which Casper won't be until after school starts in August.)

So, totally irrationally, I suddenly feel like THE DORKIEST GIRL IN THE SEVENTH GRADE. Ugh.

If it helps, I feel the same way about sign-up for after-school care for Annabel next year. It's like there are the Cool Places where the deadline is already past and there's sure to be a wait list...and then there are the places actually close to our house and potential schools, which invariably say, "Call back once you have your kindergarten assignment," or "We're taking sign-ups in May." And there's this silly part of me that wonders what's WRONG with the places I'm considering that they don't have monster waiting lists instead of being glad they're working with the school system's delayed assignment schedule...

Ugh, sympathy.

I foresee this coming up in a different form for us very soon, as Sean's friends get old enough to go to the (mostly v expensive & posh) wilderness sleep-away camps.

Oh yeah. I hear you. We're sending LB to the JCC camp, which is full-day and nice, but not the "my child really NEEDS to spend the summer programming in Java/working on her pirouette/doing mixed-media art, etc. etc." type that the less-than-full day camps seem to cater to. He's nine! He needs to run around, play at the pool, and make pointless craft items!

Of course, we were thinking about the JCC camp closest to our house, and then we found out that it is REALLY orthodox -- not just "no-meat lunch" but boys/girls separated, Hebrew-instruction kind of orthodox. LB would be the only boy w/o sidecurls and a yarmulke. So, um, off to the less-religious JCC camp in Skokie.

I like to joke that at this point, with all the money we've paid to the JCC, we're better Jews than we are Catholics, and neither of us are Jewish. But the JCC programs are awesome and the counselors (mostly twenty-something conservative Jewish girls) are super-nice. Because of my skirt-wearing habits we have lots of conversations about knee socks, and one of them is punk and spends a lot of time talking with LB about the Clash and the Ramones.
