meme; work sucks, just so you know
Jul. 23rd, 2004 03:38 pmWhat do you first remember seeing on TV?
My first memory of watching TV is Reagan getting shot, or the 1980 Olympic hockey "miracle on ice," whichever came first. I think hockey was first. The TV in question was 13-inch, b/w, bunny ears with tin foil on the ends. My father cried.
What book do you first remember reading?
I don't have a specific first book memory. I remember reading in the light from the hallway, crouched in the doorway, after climbing out of the double bed I shared with my sister. I was probably 5? But don't know what I was reading.
What movie do you first remember seeing?
I remember sitting on my father's lap at the movie theater in Machias, ME (right before it closed and the nearest movies were in Ellsworth, 1.5 hours away) watching Star Wars. Age six. Very scared by trash compactor.
What play/piece of theater do you first remember seeing?
I was in a play at age 9, held on the campus of the University of Maine at Machias. Don't know the title, but it was about a magazine editor who was undergoing therapy, and there were lots of dream sequences and flashbacks. I was the main character as a child, and also the "Princess of Pure Delight" in a dream. I can still sing snippets of the songs (it was a musical).
What is the first major world event that you remember?
Carter losing the 1980 election. My mother wrote to him in sympathy, and he wrote back, and I was so impressed that the president wrote my mother!! Also, I thought Amy Carter was super-cool. I vividly remember Reagan being shot - hearing about it on the bus on the way home from school, watching TV at home, my mother hoping fiercely he would die (in restrospect, not the best lesson for your second-grader...)

Date: 2004-07-24 02:52 pm (UTC)It's so funny/strange knowing I was there for the events you're describing (some of them) but my memory of them is so much more hazy.
