Can't possibly be as depressing as the Athens zoo, which is essentially what zoos were in about 1950s US I think.
I don't especially like zoos, and I wonder if a lot of it is because I went to some of those American zoos in the '50s and early '60s. We went to the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago at least once, but we also went to a lot of small, side of the road type operations that were disappointing then, and truly depressing in retrospect.
