I went over last night and played with him a bit -- he's blind in his off-eye, I think, and was a bit wary of approaching hands -- and got him purring nicely.
It was freakish, though: under all that fur, I felt like I was stroking a skeleton, even around the face where you don't think you will be touching bones. I was afraid I was hurting him, except he purred so hard.
So, anyway, he had some good appreciation (ate pork chop grease off D.'s plate), and a good solid purr, and now he gets a very very long painless nap.
