I am pretty sure Dewey is no better. Now, partly the problem is the number of books published in the US under those topics, but, especially in a research institution, isn't it the library's job to find books published beyond the US?
(And weren't they going to update that? I know it's been at least 7 years since the last update for Dewey, where they overhaul a whole section and start afresh; does LC have a regular update schedule?)
Finnish, Hungarian and Basque together get one letter
That's an artifact of the fact that Finnish and Hungarian (and Estonian) are related -- they're called the Finno-Ugric group, or Uralic -- and Basque is the only isolate of Europe. So, they collectively get a letter, because they're European, but they only get a letter collectively, because they're the weirdoes of Europe.
