It turns out that one of the classes invaded by the shooter at Virginia Tech on Monday was in my husband's field: an upper-level hydrology class in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. The professor, whose work was, like mr. flea's, in drinking water distribution and optimization, was killed, as were several grad students. mr. flea didn't know the professor, but thinks he's probably seen him at conferences.
I wonder what it says about me that my reaction to the whole thing has tended to be much more "that poor kid" than anger? I feel like anger would be more reasonable, somehow, and I am sure I would be angry if someone close to me had been affected. But I can only see the shooter as deeply disturbed, not as evil. Maybe it's that I am tending toward depressed lately. Gloom requires less energy than anger.
Home sick for second day in a row. Napping to begin soon, I hope. Getting better could start any time here...
