Wall-E thoughts
Jul. 3rd, 2008 10:38 amWe saw Wall-E on Monday afternoon, the whole family including Dillo, who blissfully fell soundly asleep about 20 minutes into the main feature. Perfect timing: he got to see "robot! movie!" but didn't have to last through an entire film.
There were things I loved about the movie, and things I thought were big mistakes. I loved Wall-E and his world. There were the now customary moments in Pixar films when you shake yourself and think, "THAT's computer animated? Damn." But I came away from the movie very sad, I think because I simply couldn't believe the "redemption" plotline. Aside from all our practical quibbles (on the drive home from Athens mr. flea and I pondered everything from "how did the people go to the bathroom? In-suit catheters?" to "where does the ship get natural resources to subsist for 700 years?") the recolonization story told in pictographs in the closing credits didn't work on an emotional level. The people never figured out that it was THEIR FAULT that earth was uninhabitable.
I would have preferred a movie that was all robots, I think. All on the Earth, showing the recovery of the planet aided by the robots. Maybe end with the possibility for humans to re-evolve on the planet in the future. Although the great slug-like humans did give me the one laugh-out-loud moment of the movie, when the ship tilted and they all rolled to one side of the Lido Deck.
Also, was I the only one who noticed that in the film of the CEO of Buy N Large, standing at the podium in front of a quasi-presidential seal, the lettering behind the man reads "Bu --- rge" on each side of his body, and my mind easily and instantly transformed that into "George Bush." I think it must have been on purpose.
