Loretta Chase, The Devil's Delilah.
She's the impetuous daughter of a notorious rake, returning to society, trying to play decorous, hoping to make a match. He's a just-jilted bookish fellow escaping to the countryside for solace in Aristotle who gets caught up in her storm. They fight dastardly folks who want to publish her papa's scandalous memoir against his will.

This was a damned fine book. Well-written, well-plotted, character drove the plot, sexy despite nothing more than kissing. Go team retro-reading!

Jennifer Crusie, What the Lady Wants.
She's not really grieving her dead great-uncle, but she sure wants to know what happened to his diary, not to mention the money. He's a tony stockbroker, incognito as a low-rent PI for a year as a mid-life crisis/bet. They fight her relatives (titans of industry and goombahs), a widow after a week, a dumb-as-a-post mistress, and a few misguided cops.
