Big Baby Update
Jul. 9th, 2004 09:28 amIt feels like forever since I've written anything at length about Casper.
She's 10 months old. Beautiful, so soft, round-faced and happy (recent illness notwithstanding) and her hair is getting quite long. It's noticeable when I wash it - it trails past the base of her neck when wet! Wavy at the back of her head and behind her ears, sort of Caesar-locks on the top, with a widow's peak. Stangers call it strawberry blonde, but I think it's just sort of dark blonde, not all that red. Her most remarked upon feature is her blue eyes, which are dark and set just like mine, so I am flattered whenever anyone says they're pretty!
She crawls everywhere, very quickly. Last night she took off from the kitchen while I was cooking and was heading in the bedroom door by the time I set the pan down and went after her. She is also getting good at opening doors if they are merely left ajar and not fully shut, so we have to work more carefully to contain her. Has reached a sort of detente with the cat, who still will not retreat. Casper will crawl right up to her and look back at me, knowing she's not supposed to be doing it. She pulls to stand on everything - including dangerous things like the bookcase in her room. She really only cruises when in her crib or the port-a-prison, though. Much better about not bonking her head on the coffee table, and in general better at dealing with unexpected falls - she won't always go straight to insulted tears, but will pick herself up and keep going.
Her current thing is a very dainty and silly beauty-queen wave. She waves at herself in the mirror in the bathroom (she has always liked looking at herself and me in the mirror) and trots the wave out at appropriate times (bye bye) as well as inappropriate ones. Says "uh-oh" a lot, sometimes at appropriate times, such as holding out a toy, watching herself drop it, and then saying "uh-oh."
Understands no, or is starting to. I use it most to keep her from exploring the diaper pail in her room during playtime after bath and before bed. She knows I'll say no, and anticpates it, looking at me as she approaches the pail.
In the bath, she likes to crawl around and has pulled herself up to knees - needs careful watching. Cheerful about having her hair washed and water in her face - sometimes makes a game of it.
Mostly into feeding herself. Appetite varies widely - the only things she can be relied on to eat are bits of cheese and frozen blueberries, but she has a fair variety and since she still nurses full time I figure she can't starve. (21 pounds 9 oz on Tuesday).
