An odd night, because of LLL meeting. She fell asleep at about 7:30 at the meeting but woke up when I inserted her in the snowsuit. Then to bed immediately when we got home, but took a long time to fall asleep, finally out at 9:15. Up 11:45, 3, gave a cry at 4 which woke me but kept sleeping, woke at 4:45, didn't want to nurse, lay awake for a while but fell back asleep on her own, woke crying at 5:45 and did want to nurse. I took her into bed at that point because it was cold and her paws were like ice and she was so sweet I couldn't resist. She was still sleeping when I left at 7:20. Some good long stretches in the night there, and interesting the refusal to nurse at 4:45. She didn't nurse as much as usual in the evening because of being distracted by the meeting, and wouldn't eat much cereal as I was trying her too early and she wasn't hungry yet.

I know a lot of people hate La Leche League and have had bad experiences, but despite my nervousness I went, and I really like my group. It's an evening meeting, which wreaks havoc on nighttime routines, but means that most of the mothers work at least part time and I think that fact makes the whole ethos much more about managing complex lives while wanting to breastfeed, and less about the selfless devotion of The Mother to The Baby. There's a granola edge to some of the people, and one of the women is pretty crazy, but I grew up on granola so it's comforting in a way. (One woman made a snack of peanut butter-tahini-chocolate chip-coconut balls that instantly took me back to 1978.) On the other hand my friend the nurse who works 12 hour night shifts supplements with formula, though she doesn't say so at the meetings. The atmosphere is chaotic - last night especially, as we seem to have had an unusual number of mobile babies (12-18 months) who roamed around pestering the small ones, throwing things, etc. Sometimes the meeting devolves into 3 separate conversations, plus querolous 2-year old voices and somebody crying. I like the let-it-all-hang-looseness of it. I also maybe have found a person to nanny-share with - a woman I like, and whose 13 month old son E. is a total babe.
