( ) your own phone line (we do have a household phone, and it's in my name, but I think this isn't what they mean))
( ) TiVo or a generic digital video recorder
(2) high-speed internet access (i.e., not dialup) (we have DSL - which isn't a luxury in my book, as it allows mr. flea to work from home, saving us gas, time, and the environment)
( ) a surround sound system in bedroom
( ) DVD player in bedroom
( ) at least a hundred DVDs
( ) a childfree bathroom

( ) a gym membership
( ) large exercise equipment at home

(7) enough camping gear for a weekend trip in an isolated area (heh, we used to camp...)
( ) a boat
( ) a jet ski
( ) a neighborhood committee membership

(8) wealthy family members (mostly, cheap, but wealthy!)
( ) two or more family cars
( ) a walk-in closet or pantry
(9) a yard
( ) a hammock
( ) a personal trainer
(10) good credit (this is hard work, not being spoiled, unless someone else is paying your bills!)
(11) expensive jewelry (inherited, gift, engagement ring)
( ) a designer bag that required being on a waiting list to get
( ) at least $100 cash in your possession right now (I can't recall the last time I had $100 in cash kicking around - I live on debit card)

(12) a stock portfolio (well, mutual funds)
(13) a passport
( ) a horse
( ) a trust fund

( ) stay at home with little financial sacrifice
( ) pay someone else to cook your meals
(16) pay someone else to watch your children or walk your dogs (day care a luxury? I suppose if you don't need a job to live...)

I feel I had a standard middle-class upbringing, maybe a little less focussed on acquiring things but more focussed on acquiring experiences than most people. My family skimped on cars and stereos and splurged on education and travel, and that's basically the way I choose to live, too. It's certainly a privileged life compared to most people's, but I don't think you count as spoiled unless you take it for granted. I have worked hard for the things I have and have done, and could live without almost all of them if I needed to.

Our upbringing is considerably more ambitious than middle-middle class, I would say. And I have seen this meme done a bunch of times now, and it's completely bizarro and wrong-y. Like, Ever been to New York as a marker of being spoiled?? What about all those people who live there?

The thing with the lakes, same diff. Of course I have access to a body of water! Revere Beach is one of the first public beaches on public transit (its own T station!). I think access to a body of water is only a luxury if you live in, like, the desert.
