book read; these kids today

Malcolm Gladwell, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.
I like Gladwell's writing a lot, and there are some really interesting ideas presented in a very acessible fashion here. It suffers from little-book-by-a-magazine-writer syndrome, and as usual I craved more depth & more hard science backup (footnotes, people! Endnotes are not as geeky!). Read too fast, too - I wanted more! But very enjoyable and thought-provoking.

****

Observed on the bus coming home this afternoon: 3 Looniversity students talking together, all young men.
A: Pink striped oxford shirt, hot pink grosgrain ribbon belt, faded navy shorts with embroidered pink martinis on them, loafers with tassels, no socks.
B: Red polo with the collat fully popped and crease lines down the front, red and navt canvas belt with brass buckle, navy shorts with lobsters embroidered on them, missed the footwear.
C: Navy and white striped polo shirt, navy cotton sweater tied around the shoulders, leather belt, Nantucket red shorts, shiny black loafers, no socks.

I refrained from asking them, "Is this a joke?," but barely.

The boys on the bus do not see the irony. Now, admittedly, the last time the exact same silly fad was everywhere, I didn't see the irony either -- but then again, I was ten.

I really liked Blink, too.

Oh, the clothes. Makes me want to watch Pretty in Pink, for the Blaine snark. I think my ROOMMATE had his collar popped tonight. Mr. Stinky-Vegetarian-Foreign movie watching boy, with collar popped.

Surely they were on their way to a theme party, after, um, raiding the Preppie Museum for their costumes. Surely, right? Please?

Nothing makes you feel older than having the kids think the crap you wore in high school is all cool and retro. IT LOOKED STUPID THEN AND IT STILL DOES.

When this happened to my mom, I was like 12.
