Birthday Party Tyranny

Everyone in the entire universe - or at least in Casper's class at school - was born in late summer. So we now have invitations to 3 birthday parties on two upcoming weekends. One is a "Tractor Party" at the family's farm; one is a "Mermaids and Pirates" party; one is another little gym party. The Mermaid party has invitations that were color-printed on thick paper, then hand crumpled and rubbed in dirt and had the edges hand-burned bedofr ebing tied up with a ribbon. Did I mention that all 18 kids in the class were invited (and also to the other parties) and that Mermaid Girl's mother has both a job and 6 month old twins?

Already this calendar year we've seen 2 Pony Parties (same pony), a Rainbow Party, and the Princess Party at Little Gym - see the cakes, made by the mother, here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/casperflea/973332010/.

I kind of just want to say no, we can't make it to these parties. Casper isn't special friends with any of the kids, I don't think. But we'll go. I think we'll give books as presents under protest.

And what are we supposed to do for Casper's birthday? I am NOT inviting the whole class. I think we'll send cupcakes to school for them. But I'd like to have a party - like a casual cookout/potluck, with cake - for friends where we're friends with the whole family. Except we have a tiny house, weak air conditioning, and it's likely to be beastly hot and mosquitoey in our yard. So logistically, not very sensible. So I am fretting, again. (I did this last year, too. We had one family over for pizza and cake, and Casper was perfectly happy with that. But that was before the current escalation began.)

Other notes:
Dillo has discovered the big Little Tikes car and he LOOOOOOVES it. Climbs all over it, great excitement, opening and closing the door, turning the steering wheel, standing on the seat with his head looking out the back window. Pictures are still in the camera. He was up at 4 today and not down again until 6, at which point sensible people have to get up for the day. But prior to that, a good night.

Casper had Ellen over for a playdate and they had a spat. Ellen didn't like Casper singing (one of the songs from the movie Spirit.) Casper put her hands on her hips and said, "What is going on here? I am singing in my OWN HOME!"

We also went to the playground at Casper's soon-to-be school for a PTA-sponsored playday. Casper was hesitant at first but started following a couple of slightly older girls and soon was one of a gang of six playing all the way across the playground, a game involving an evil witch and freeze power. She didn't want to leave when Dillo got cranky. Such a big girl.

We're going to share an after-school nanny with another family, one of the Park Mommies. Their son is almost a year older than Casper, but I think they will deal well with each other. His best friend at day care is a girl who is precociously verbal like Casper (actually, far more so - she's scarily bright.)
