books read

T. Berry Brazelton, Toddlers and Parents. Lesson: toddlers live in a state of constant frustration at being too little, not understanding, and not getting their way. Be patient and kind but set firm limits.

Jo Beverly, Winter Fire. She's the firey daughter of a navy captain, serving as a companion to two elderly society ladies! He's a brooding Marquess, worried about Georgian court intrigue, a baby-daddy story, and his devilish cousin Rothgar! They fight crime! Um, no - they gather misteltoe!

Laura Kinsale, My Sweet Folly. He's a tortured East India Company nabob's son with a disastrous dead cocktease of a wife who may currently be having a psychotic episode! She's, like, the nicest naivest ferret-carrying widow ever, from Toot-upon-the-Batch - even her stepdaughter loves her! They fight crime, murderers, poisoners, kidnappers, political intrigue, and nasty kitchen boys who push them from prison hulks into the Thames!

Can I have a cousin named Rothgar? All the cool kids have one now.

It may please you to know that, before I was assaulted by a nap this afternoon, I was learning about Talleyrand in Napoleon's court via a forgettable romance called Velvet, by the hilariously-named Jane Feather. (No, it was not Talleyrand having sex; it was a number of his spies and foes and not-really-foes-although-we-are-parted-by-the-English-Channel.)
